Red Skies at Night

Photographer's delight!

Maybe/probably the best sunset I've seen at the coast.

I was standing there wondering if I should stay. The tide was still coming up and my avenue of escape was being closed off with each wave. But another guy showed up, then another. So I stayed and we shot this on Saturday evening. Managed to time the waves and get out with only my feet wet.

D800,
24-70mm,
3 Soft Grad,
1sec, F/8,

Thanks,
Chris

Chris... beautiful image...
question...
How do you like that 24-70 2.8?
I have a D800 and I'm considering adding that to the bag.
Thanks

Thanks Tom!

I love the 24-70 2.8. It's a huge leap up from the 18-70 3.5/4.5 I was shooting on the D200. It still took nice crisp images, but this full frame lens is very nice, and sharp. I'd say it kind of depends on what/how you shoot. The 14-24 seems to be the sharpness lens of choice out there. I don't have that one, so can't comment on it. They are both beasts being quite heavy and considerably larger than what I was used to with the DX 18-70. I don't see how you could go wrong with the 24-70!

Gorgeous one, Chris. Red skies at night, sailors delight, red skies in the morning, sailors warning. Or at least I think that is how it goes.
It's all about the amazing sky in this one...... :toast:

Wow, not only "the best sunset" but also a great comp, exciting wave action, and those reflections! Excellent work with the grad, and great timing on the waves. I'm a little surprised that a full second exposure recorded such great wave action. If I ever get near waves that big, I'll keep that in mind.

Wow, what a sunset, Chris! The comp is very good also, love the glow on the rocks and water, the stacks seem a little too dodged, but I'm also viewing this on my laptop. Excellent stuff. :toast:

Yes, Saturday's sunset put on quite a show! Glad you were at a spot to take advantage. I usually prefer just a slightly faster shutter speed, but am enjoying the reflected light on the water.

Gorgeous Chris. I'm so attracted to the reflected color in the water, but the crashing wave and sky ain't bad either!!

Wonderful shot of this iconic place. It's amazing that there are so many different photos that can come from one place, depending on the tide, sky, etc. Nice light on the water. Very good job with the ND filter...next time I will use that as opposed to the reverse ND.

Just gorgeous Chris! Awesome color, not too overstated in that regard. Here is a case where the sea rocks don't need the detail because their size in the frame aren't demanding the detail. this is wonderful!

Stay safe out there!
