Obscure Birdwing Grasshopper - (Schistocerca obscura) from last year in the thick of some new zinnia growth. Cloudy/overcast conditions.
1D M3, Sigma 150mm F/2.8 - Was going to crop/compose a bit, but left this one full frame..

Excellent look at this GH in its environment, Howard. Grasshoppers make good subjects, IMO, because of their detail and unique markings. This fellow blends into the scenery, but its markings show up nicely in the larger image. Technically, this is an excellent image with really good detail as exhibited in the larger view.

The details of this insect are excellent in the larger image, Howard; and the DOF is perfect to keep the subject sharp and make the BG just soft enough to separate it. Perfect comp with no cropping.

Excellent comp, detail, color, and DOF. I like the pose with him sitting on one leaf and it looks like he's holding onto the leaf in front with his front legs.

Howard:
The details from this perfect focusing is just amazing especially in the larger version. :toast:

Just wish the left foot wasn't partly obscured by the leaf.

Ha...very funny, I like your alternate title. I don't mind him being obscured...comp is excellent, as is your DOF management. My only nit is that the light seems a bit flat.

I'm enjoying this and wondering where you'd crop at. It looks perfect to me. The soft lighting really lets the hopper's details shine.
