Plateau Purple

The badland-type patterns on the Tonto Plateau were nicely visible when viewed from above on the rim of the Grand Canyon. Normally I am conservative and more natural in processing my images, but the mauve tone I saw in the original file led me to bulge the sides of my artistic box.

(a larger image is provided and C&C is always welcome)

Hey Doug, this is a real beauty! Bulge on Bro, I think it is very artistic, with so many fine details to take in.

Later, Shane

It's interesting that you post this crop over here. When I saw this over on the RMNP forum I noticed this crop as I scrolled down and thought it was much stronger than the full frame. Now that I see it like this I definitely like it more. There are lots of interesting shapes and textures and this definitely provides a unique view of the Grand Canyon. I personally think the processing works well here. Nice work, Doug. :toast:

This is landscape at a new level, Doug. Very real, but also very abstract. Excellent eye to work through to this. Curious. What's the light here? Pre/post sunrise/sunset?

Thank you for your nice comments.
Tony, this was taken at about 5:00PM. Sunset was about 6:10 iirc. The sky was pretty clear with a few high clouds.

Lots of fine detail in the large, a unique vision you have found and created with the processing. Had you not mentioned the processing, the subdued lighting looks very natural to me for that time of day in the southwest. With so many interesting and colorful formations in the desert lands and the varying light, it looks believeable to me.

I sure like the colors and how you've emphasized a touch of warmth on the sides and top of the butte. This is a great combination of real and abstract, with the emphasis on the abstract. Very well done!

Beautiful lines and contrasting colors, no nits from me. I also like the pano format, it works well with the land forms. Great work Doug!

Beautiful color and patterns and love that subtle soft light. The larger image is superb. Very glad you decided to 'bulge the sides of your artistic box' as the result is exquisite.

Nice job. The extra color emphasized the contours of the bluffs. A very pleasant image

The more I look at this, the more I like it, Doug. Especially the large version!
I enjoy your telephoto work from the Canyon and think that this is one of your best. Very well seen and captured.
Not sure how you 'developed' it, but it is tasteful, subtle and nearly impossible to tell that anything out of the ordinary was done. That's a sign of successful 'development', IMO. Like Shane said, 'Bulge on, bro!'.
And may this be a winner of the 2013 Az. Highways photo contest!

This photograph sings on two fronts. It not only dipicts a fascinating geology but does so in such stylistic fashion.

Well done, Doug. :toast:
