Here is a more high-key version of my previous posting (2/18) of this orchid. I switched to a white background and the off-camera flash fired but otherwise everything else was pretty much the same. Curious which version you like best.

Canon Rebel T1i. 180mm macro lens. F/18 for 0.6 sec. ISO 200. Off-camera flash, tripod mounted.

Hi Carolyn,
I like the black BG best. Somehow , the flowers look more translucent on the black and appear to glow. I think the white is just too light for this flower to shine.

Very nice, Carolyn. No nits, but, since you asked, I agree with Lucy about preferring the previous version, including about the way the orchid appears to glow against the black bg. In fact, that was what was so striking - it was like the orchid was backlit, but with a dark bg.

Hi Carolyn :wavey: I.m not the odd man out, but it's a close call for the first version. i really enjoy both versions but the black bg does more for this beautiful Orchid

This is nice as well but I too prefer the first posting with the darker BG.

I like both, but the black one the best. Would love to know how you did that, off site, of course, I'm still learning.

If you hadn't posted that black glowing version I would think this could not get any better!

I'm partial to the high key look for orchids but in this case I prefer the dark background. I think it makes the lighting more interesting.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I also prefer the darker background but that is my usual preference in regards to dark vs. high-key images so it is interesting to hear others opinions. I do agree the "glow" gets lost in the high-key image.

Carolyn, I have looked again at the previous post and for my opinion the lower light enhances the colors and the black background increases the feeling of transparency. I don't need to write which of the two I prefer! Always splendid anyway.
Cheers.

Carolyn: When I first glanced at the thumbnail I thought it was one of Mark's. I hope you take that as the high compliment intended. Beautiful in every way. >=))>

Again the white bg really compliments the colors and quality of the blooms. Beautifully done. :toast:

I suppose the obvious thing to say is that this and the previous orchid image are just different, Carolyn, each excellent in its own way. If I have to choose, I will go for this one ( maybe just because I've become very fond of high key myself !! ) - I think perhaps it brings out the delicacy of the colours slightly better.
