Great Gray - Behavior?

Earlier this month, I convinced my daughter to come snowshoeing with me with the aim of finding a Great Gray - a species we had never seen.

After three hours in the bitter cold, we located not one, but three of these beauties. Unfortunately, it was just before dark, but I did manage some shots.

This bird began acting strangely and I told my daughter to watch carefully, as something was about to happen. Well, it happened...

Nikon D300; 500mm; f 5.6@ 1/200th; ISO 400; HH; approx. 70% FF. Lots of messing around in the left half of the frame as there were numerous blown out white areas.

All comments and suggestions most welcome.

It appears that he's looking at you out of the corner of his eye. A beautiful shot that would have been absolutely killer if his head had been turned toward the camera. What's that thing hanging down from below him? Almost looks like a leather tether.

John - that's all that is left of the mice and voles he/she had been feeding on.

Well, that's one your daughter will remember! The owl looks almost embarrassed.
