Not my usual composition from Zion. But it fits the theme this week. This is from late last October, in east Zion. I spent quite a bit of time shooting this scene, with varying clouds drifting through.

Canon 5DII
Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS
58mm, f/18, 0.6 seconds, ISO 50, polarizer

I think this image works very well, Jim. The lighting is subtle, as befits the subject matter. The tree trunk is centered, but that's not a bad thing here. I sometimes find that other elements of a photo distract from, or one might say compensate for, the main subject being centered, and here it's the asymmetricality of the branches: that the branches lowest down are stretching out far to the right is balanced by a brnach farther up that's stretching out to the left. A pleasing image, IMHO.

I like the stark beauty of this dead tree from all the angles and curves in the branches. The blue sky and subtle clouds make a nice backdrop to show off this brown skeleton of a tree. Nancy commented about how the left reaching branch is balanced by the right reaching branch. I agree but not sure how I feel about them extending beyond the frame. . .I think I would like to see the ends of those branches.

An interesting approach to the challenge. I'm not sur I like the branches that come to the edge of the photo or the ones that extend beyond. But I know so little about this kind of shot that I'm hardly qualified to comment.

It's a neat looking snag, with considerable character. The soft lighting and clouds work nicely.
