Closing In - Red Fox

There is a family of mink using my dock as a winter hideout.

This fox caught their scent and stealthily approached from upwind. A waste of time, though, as the mink were inaccessible.

Nikon D300; 500mm; f6.3@ 1/1250th; ISO 250; HH; approx 80%FF.

All comments and suggestions most welcome.

The fox looks great and my only real nit would be to wish for a lower, eye level perspective, which is not always possible. I am puzzled by the shadowy area on the left and lower left part of the frame, on the snow in front of the fox.

The first thing that strikes me is the perfect exposure Tom; excellent detail in both the fox (including the eyes) as well as the snow. After seeing Lon's remark about the shadow I did start wondering what is going on there.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I looked at the series of shots taken of the fox - the shadow appears in some and not in others, depending on the exact location of the fox.. The day was overcast as it is today.

I waited until this afternoon to see what was casting the shadow and it appears to be a limb of a pine tree along the shore - although the shadow seems less pronounced today.

Great exposure to capture all the detail and colour of the fox, not to mention its intent stare. Nicely done.

Wonderful exposure and very nice colors. I like the two raised feet. Almost appears if the tail might be a bit sharper than the face, but sharpness is more than acceptable throughout. No nits here. Now you'll have to get a photo of those mink!!!
