Roan Highlands Winter

Although I only live 90 minutes away, I have never been able to get up to Roan Highlands near Carvers Gap TN/NC when there was snow on the mountain. Seems like weekend weather was never great or when it was I was out of town. This Saturday turned out to be good weather on a weekend when I was in town.

I got there before many others and the snow was still smooth and pristine. It was still snowing and the highlands were in the clouds. Not great for the grand landscape, but super for low contrast photography in the woods.

This is my favorite of the day. More available at http://www.thesiggins.com/AllWorks/Earth-Sea-and-Sky/Roan-Mountain-Winter/28299652_ZmZ8rJ

These kinds of wintry scenes always impress me, and yours is no exception. My only thought is that there is too much empty bottom area, and cutting a little out might make a better composition.

Richard, I like this winter scene very much. That fresh snow really looks so inviting and I like the mood of this image a lot. I agree with Michael's thoughts and would crop of some of the bottom snow, maybe about 1/2 of it. Kind of a personal choice I guess! :toast:

Nice peaceful winter scene Richard. My eyes are lead into the middle of the trees quite nicely. I agree with Nick and Michael about the crop. Very nice though.

Really enjoy the frost covered trees and how the eye is lead into the forest by that opening in the woods. Nicely done.

Richard, your composition is like a pleasant invitation to scout this wintry forest to me. To my eye, the large extent of the smooth snow in the foreground adds to the serenity of the scene, although cropping about 1/4 of it would still be an option for me. I enjoy the atmosphere you convey to me a lot.

The light gives a great "feel" to this shot. Ditto Nick's suggestion. Sweet scene.

Good angle and nice the way a "path" is suggested between the trees just slightly off-center.

Very peaceful winter scene Richard. I agree with the others about cropping a bit off the bottom. I checked out your gallery of images on your website. My favorite was the 2nd image (pano with all of the tree trunks). You should definitely post that one here.
