One would think with thousands of subjects getting a good picture of a bird would be easy. But it was like the "forest for the trees" phenomena when I visited the Sandhill Crane migration at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge recently. I have lots of pictures of a giant flock of cranes, and a couple of pictures of cranes. Here's one of the latter that I hope you will find interesting. The larger version might even look more like a crane shot instead of a flock shot.

Nikon D600, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 + Nikon TC20E, 400mm, f5.6 @1/2000 sec.

Interesting indeed, and such crowded places are always a challenge - you managed very well ! Cheers, Hans

Yes tough with the lenses and DOF we end up with. I find the same all the time, it seems easy with a flock, but its not.

Love the shot and the scene. Must be great to see this even without a camera. Certainly something I would love to see, so this is great in my book. Must be a lot of Cranes, heck I've never seen one, so this would be fantastic to see.

All the best Russ and nicely taken.

Danny.

Thanks everyone. Yup Danny, it is an incredible spectacle to witness - with or without a camera.

Nice timing to get the group landing and I like the wing spread. A interesting composition with the foreground cranes and mountain background.

Russ, well, this image certainly has much "upstairs downstairs" drama! Beautiful timing and elegant capture.
