Oak and Pines

by Nick Bristol

This is another picture I made last Sunday morning in the rain and fog. I thought it was a perfect morning to head in to the pine forest nearby and try to make a few new images. The rain and fog added a lot of mood to the forest and I enjoyed the quietness of being there.
Thanks for any of your thoughts on this one, and for all your comments on my last post.

(giggles) I thought this was a birch scene by the thumbnail! My tired eyes were wrong.
A lovely image Nick. Dreamlike.
I'd be tempted to clone out that chaotic lower branch for a cleaner comp. That is, if I could ethically live with myself.

The pines in the mist alone are wonderful...but then the hint of green & the rusty oak leaves send this over the top! Nice work as usual!

Thanks so much for your comments on this one so far. As always, so much appreciated! Nick
Matt, I know what you mean about that branch and had some thoughts about it. I decided it didn't really bother too much (but would be happy if it wasn't there) so went ahead and posted it. I'm working on the file now for a print I might do later today. Thanks! Nick

Really like the light mist, it really sets the mood here Nick.
I especially like these muted colors, and the comp works for me as posted.
Very nice :wavey:

Nick, This image really works for me. Soft colors and great comp but it is the overall mood impact that makes it for me. A real winner. Chet :toast:

An impressive composition for me with the strong verticals heading to the sky, Nick. A wonderful frame for the filigree twigs and foliage in the foreground.

Everything works on this one, Nick. I'm not too aggressive at shooting verticals myself, but find when it's right like this scene it is perfect. The long barren trees along with the fog does a fine job of providing a very different contrast to the rest of the colored foliage overall. Works wonderfully especially in the larger version.

I like your emphasis on the understory, the shape contrast between all of the spikey tall pine trunks and the leaves, and how it all fades into the fog. I think a modest crop off the top tells much the same story and puts more emphasis on the shrub with last years leaves but this version works well, albeit with more emphasis on the spikey pine trunks.

Thanks so much guys! I just did a print of this and I really like it. I only did the first one at 15x21" but by the time I mat and frame it I think it will be a decent size. Not everyone wants or even have room for the larger prints. If I sell it I'll try a bigger one. Anyways, I'm happy with the looks of it. Really appreciate the comments! Nick

Simply superb, Nick. Love the lines of those pine trees and that tree with the remnants of last years leaves couldn't be better. Add the fog.... exquisite. I'll bet that print looks amazing.

Thanks Nancy Lea, Nick and Vance for your comments!
Vance, I'm quite happy with the print and think it will look great when I get it framed up. I first printed it on mat finish paper but then reprinted it on a satin finish and enjoyed it even more with a bit more pop. It is also very close to what shows on the website here looking with Firefox. Thanks all! Nick

Hi Nick :wavey: This is to me one of your best :jump: the way you framed the oak against the pines was pure artistry... the soft tones and soft light work wonders together :toast: :toast:

Oh, this is lovely Nick - so moody and inviting. I might consider cropping just a bit off the top, but that's just personal taste. Beautiful capture.
