Snarlin' 'Yote

This was perhaps my favourite Coyote "action" shot from a recent trip to Yellowstone. We came across this particular coyote one afternoon not far from an elk carcass where ravens, magpies and a red fox were already feeding. Unimpressed with being late, he adopted this aggressive posture as he slowly walked towards them, successfully driving them away ... at least temporarily.

All comments, critique and suggestions welcome.

tech stuff: Canon 1D4, Canon 500mm f4 & 1.4x, f/11, 1/800 sec, ISO-640, Manual Spot Metering. Image cropped 15% left and top, some distracting shrubs cloned.

Rick, nice timing to catch this behavior, the body language is very cool. The foreground shrubbery frames the coyote well, however, the dark, prominent rock in the background merges somewhat with his body and competes a bit with the coyote for attentiion (I realize, not much you could have done!). Thanks for sharing this interesting photo!

Very good exposure choice. Coyote's details really standout. No doubting his intentions with that posture.

Great behavior shot. Man, those teeth look sharp, and the body language tells the story. Good one, Rick.

A very cool and interesting pose Rick! From the thumbnail I could already notice that tehre was some dark BG element merging with your subject, this really is unfortunate. I would suggest another crop here; as presented it feels too much as if the coyote is pushed into the RTC.

"My Oh My what large teeth you have" It's no wonder that red fox disappeared so quickly
Great capture of this coyote posturing as he approached the carcass. Nice details and a very pleasing composition.

Nice Picture, Rick. Nice detail on the fur and teeth. Sure is a menacing looking creature.
