Just another one of the 25 images I down-selected from the 120 I took yesterday. Pentax K-5, Pentax 300mm, f/5.6, ISO 100, 1/200s.

This, again, has the same length as the original RAW file but is cropped to about 75% the original height for a 2:1 aspect ratio. For me it works especially well for this content and since it enabled me to remove some out-of-focus grasses in front of me.

Nice looking backfire. Having done this type of control burning most of my adult life, I can tell you this looks fairly good, if a little dry. With tall grass like this, it pays to have a crew guarding for thrown sparks until the fire is away from the break. The guy with the drip torch is walking down a harrowed break, which is better than a plowed break, as a plow will turn fuel under that will smolder and burn after the main fire has moved out. The smoke is white, indicating a slow movement and complete burn. Finally, the young man carrying the drip torch needs some training. He is holding the torch where it drips behind him and where he cannot see any spots he might have missed. One of the important ingredients of control burning is to lay out a consistent bead of fire so no unburned streaks are left to come back as a head fire and jump the break.

Oh, I liked the picture! It brought back some vivid memories.
