Brant Landing

OK - I'm a complete novice here and this is my first post! I've been a lifelong bird-watcher, but only recently decided to attempt to capture some of the natural world in pictures.
This one is from 04/06/13 and was taken on the Cape Cod Canal MA. I know the picture is a bit noisy - I'm ... well.. a novice.. and I was playing around a bit with my settings when this goose made a landing close-by... lesson one learned.. be prepared! So that explains why my ISO was so high as well as my shutter being unnecessarily high... Beyond that though, I would love to hear your comments - After lurking here for some time I've garnered that you tend to have constructive criticism and push the limits of excellent photography that I, one day, aspire to!

The only adjustment I made was to the light balance and it is un-cropped...

Settings:
Nikon D7000
Sigma 50-500 @ 500
ISO - 1600
F/6.3
S- 1/6400 (oops)
no flash

Welcome to NPN! Glad you've taken the plunge and posted this image. You'll get all the help you can ask for here. I think you've already done a good job at a self critique of the image. It is a bit noisy. Being prepared is excellent advice. If the bird were more on the right side of the frame with room to fly into, the overall composition would have been stronger, as well as a bit higher in the frame. Sharpness: The bird isn't quite sharp. Getting sharp images of birds in flight will simply take practice, some good technique and the right camera settings for autofocus tracking. Keep shooting and it will come. Hope you will participate in the critique process as well. It is very helpful for learning.

Keith, Thanks for the introduction! I keep looking at this image and wishing that I had a vertical shot with the whole reflection included (that with a sharper focus would have been perfect). Practice makes perfect I know, but this opportunity came within the blink of an eye, then it was gone... sharpness is definitely an issue and I hope will come with practice and study of the AF setting for this camera/lens combination. Thanks!
