Fungal Forest

I found this large group of Oyster Mushrooms sprouting from a standing dead tree near my home in western Oregon. After positioning the tripod-mounted camera underneath the mushrooms and pointing the lens straight up, I tried some exposures. The light was too bright at the gills and dark at the base, so I used my jacket to create a mini-darkroom around the mushrooms. The shutter speed went up to 8 seconds, and the mushrooms seemed to glow with their own light.

Canon 5d Mark ii, 100mm Macro Lens, 8 seconds at f/16, ISO 100, Gitzo Tripod

The resulting image is outstanding. F16 gave you excellent DOF even to the curving portion nearer the lens. :toast:

This is quite lovely! The way the lines are curving & the glow makes it look flame like! Excellent work!

Excellent! Control of light is vital...and McGiver jacket or whatever is working well for this photo. Great eye for 'seeing' this composition and selecting the right size to enjoy the rib-action.

This is extremely well done! Keen eye and good improvisation. Such a lovely profusion of ridges and valleys, yet no departure from reality. Congrats for an outstanding work! :toast:

It's the glow that make the lines pop up and give a three-dimensional feeling. Great shot and editing.

Thomas: Necessity is the mother of invention so kudos on your light management technique. One of the very best fungi shots I've seen here in a long while. Superbly crafted image. >=))>

Stellar image Thomas! Those curving lines and shapes are almost hypnotic, and the mushroom's soft orange glow really tops it all off. Excellent work! :toast: :toast: :toast:

Great radiating lines and a gradient of light...seems just a tad soft in a few spots, but overall wonderful visual effect
