Adirondack River Pine_BW

Paddling down the Saint Regis River, I admired a lone white pine surrounded by tamaracks as I rounded an island, and then noticed the leading lines of the grass in the channel. I was “shooting from the hip” (which I practice a lot) holding the camera close to the water, over the edge of the kayak as I drifted downstream.

With practice, aiming instinctively can be quite accurate, but still I make sure I shoot lots of frames. As a result, I have quite a few "keepers" from this experience. I am posting another view of this in the Weekly Challenge Gallery HERE, but in color. I'd appreciate any comments comparing the two.

THANKS

Canon 50D
Sigma 17-70mm. f/2.8;
1/250 sec. @ f/11; ISO 200
Handheld from Kayak
I shot this over two years ago, and just reprocessed it in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. After that, I thought of trying duotone on it, so I did that in ACR.

UPDATE: Ugh... Ken Smith just pointed out that I have some colors gone wild here, so how this looks may depend a lot on your browser and your monitor. When I applied the duotone on my system, it was more subtle, and not at all pink. One of those problems with converting to sRGB and also dealing with different monitors.

Lovely! The water grasses are terrific. The direct pointing to the sun...the trees...everything aligns so well. Monochrome treatment is intriguing. I like it...as the contrast and tones are presented 'uncluttered' by color. But, would b/w be good too and with greater audience appeal as this seems to have a pink/cayan tint? Just my day-dreaming type of curious thought. WELL DONE!

Great comp Wayne and absolutely love the B&W/duotone processing you did. I like this version much more than the color version, it has a more 'fine art' feel to it than the other. :toast:

Wonderful image Wayne. I love the processing on this. The grass makes such a wonderful leading line. Beautifully seen and done.

Impressive shot from the kayak - I probably would have tipped over. I prefer the comp of this version, as the grasses don't interfere with the reflected tree. The pink cast, while not maybe your intention, looks really nice to me and if you hadn't mentioned it I thought this was your artistic rendition. Has an early morning feel to me. Fantastic.

Fantastic Wayne, really like the comp and processing, the grasses leading into the scene is really a big plus in my opinion, I also like the color version, and to be honest, I like them both, I would be happy with either one. Beautifully done. Take care.

Nicely done. This image is much more dramatic than the color version. I think the pink cast works, although true B&W would probably also be great. The flowing grasses 'make' this a really nice shot.

The composition works very well. I love the FG. I like the processing on this one but the full color version is nice as well.

I like the color version as well, but this one is the winner for me.

I love the blue/pink combination in this one. The color version is very nice, but this version seems to have greater visual impact. I must confess that at first I thought all the trees here were covered in hoarfrost! So I was quite blown away when I then looked at the color version, and noted the greenery. Great composition, but your processing makes it a true winner.

This is great, Wayne--i prefer this duotone version! Love the leading lines. The bg looks slightly oversharpened. Very nice!

I am not a great b&w lover, but I think this image is a better image. Great contrast and depth. Fine image.

Nice composition, Wayne. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought the foreground was ice. The leading lines are effective in the composition and I like the mood of this for something a little different.

What a terrific shot, Wayne! I was surprised when you described it as a BW because I thought I was seeing pink and blue tones. I do like it this way; it is lovely and unique. The comp is fantastic and you have definitely perfected shooting from the kayak.

terrific shot, Wayne, and great presentation. Yes, pinks and blues are quite visible here but after all it's a duotone, not a B&W. I like it very much as it is :toast: :toast: :toast:

Very cool image. I like how it's not just another cookie cutter picture. Very unique and well captured.

Great comp, of a great scene! Love the foreground, and the toning works. I can't say I see a pink cast. Some local soft pink in the sky maybe.

Sensational image, Wayne. I absolutely love everything about this. The toning, lighting and lead-in flow together wonderfully. I would imagine this being a difficult area to compose and simplify so well, and I can't imagine it being done much better than this.
