Oneonta Gorge

Pacific NWest moderators organized a wkend tour of the Columbia Gorge...viewpoints, falls, and lush trails formed the agenda. A lot of ground was covered. Most of us were 'first-timers', so photos were sometimes not in the cards. But, action was plenty highlighted by great interactions among 6-7 participants, pass-able weather (does the wind ever stop blowing?), crowds...oh boy, new vistas for us newbies, plus good eats, and goofy jokes... including a few of my personal favs.

We had a short window to shoot the Oneonta Gorge as the sun was shifting overhead and would quickly burn the walls and canyon floor.

Very nice composition and light between the green walls. This is one place in Oregon I'd like to explore.

Ahhhh, boy, is that green ever glowing. Very big springtime refreshment going on in this one. If anything, I feel the lower-right gravel is taking up a bit more than its fair share of room, but a minor point. The light was what is really moving the eye back into this one.

I like this image. Great lines running through the frame. The light feels just bright enough but not too bright down the gorge. The very top feels a bit dull to me though, perhaps dial the exposure back up a hair?

Man, I wish I could have made it down with you guys Ken! As Marc mentioned, it's that glowing light that pulls one's eye through the scene. Love your different take on this!

Love that green glow within the canyon and how the river moves the eye back to that lush green blast of light. Gorgeous.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Oneonta is wonderful. Glad you got a nice shot out of it. My favorite time to go in there is when the rivers are at flood stage and it is raining, but the logistics are challenging.

Cool, Ken--i really like the bg light! Not totally sold on the rocky shore at bottom--maybe more water and less rocks would have worked better for me. Overall though, not too shabby.

Very nice image of Oneonta Ken. I really like the "C" shape created by the water and the rocks. The glow on the left wall from the reflected light on the right is beautiful. It looks like the group had a wonderful time out in the Gorge.

beautiful image, ken! the green light in the background is amazing - it keeps drawing my eyes in. the comp works very well for me, too. i agree with the others about the rocky shore - maybe toning it down a bit helps to make it less conspicous.

The green glows are wonderful and the stream pull my eyes nicely from the darker area into the bright distance. To me, the greens and the steep, narrow canyon are the most important parts, so I'd suggest cropping the bottom curve of the stream to better emphasize those.

Thanks for the detailed comments from many of you. Tweeked a bit to darken the gravel, this new version is improved...but, I kept the water at the bottom as the ripples carry the direction and lines that sweep the viewer upstream. I barely knocked the highlights at the end of the gorge as this area was quite bright and bold. Ken Smith

I really like this image. Not only is it a more unusual destination, but it is very nicely composed. I might consider burning down the gravel a bit, particularly that sunny patch, to draw the viewer's eye up to the sunny part of the gorge.
