Sharp Shinned Hawk
by Dennis Plank
I was out a couple of evenings ago just taking pictures of the back yard birds around the pond. This Sharpie suddenly blew across the yard then came back and perched up on an old hollow log that I've set up as a feeder. It posed for me for about a minute before leaving. I should have bumped up the f-stop, since I had it set for small birds. Still, I liked the glancing evening light and the way it brought out the textures in the plumage and lit up the eye.
1DIV, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Black Widow on RRS legs, f5.6, 1/4000, Av mode with -2/3 compensation (set for goldfinches). Increased the exposure a bit in ACR, other processing in CS6. Cropped to 10.8 MP. Taken May 3rd at 7:16 pm.
Your comments and criticisms are most appreciated.

10 commentsA couple of small niggles: the crop has the bird very centred, it might have benefitted from being off centre. Also just behind the tail there are a couple of OOF twigs sticking up that I am sure a clever fellow like you could clone out.

It adds a good sense of depth or 'realism' to the image IMHO.
