This cardinal posed on the edge of our garage. The sky was a flat grey, so I exposed just for the bird which let the sky go blank.

Nice detail and eye contact. Sure wish these guys had continued their westward habitat expantion into California.
Without a bit of BG definition, the whole BG fades into the NPN BG.
You could run a thin black line around the image to separate it.
There might be a lot of unneeded dead space, hoever, in the present crop.

Tough to balance the vivid red of the bird with the grey/white background.
I think I would have cropped differently to minimise the amount of white and let the red take up most of the frame. The harsh contrast between red and (what is effectively) white means the overall image is not that pleasing to view. (IMO)

John,
I am not to sure about this the bird looks OK to me, but I find the background a little disturbing with its basic lack of colour, I would certainly support the idea of a vertical crop to remove a lot of the BG.

Nice portrait of this Cardinal! I like the repost much better! Now you have a closeup portrait and the color of the bg works well with the red of the Cardinal.
