Hi Claude is this a big crop as I'm quite surprised about the IQ of the D3x?
I would look to applying a certain amount of NR to the BKD as it does look quite noisey. It's a little unfortunate about having such a dark BKD as the head blends in, however you can't lighten the head sadly without it looking a little odd. You could however as an adjustment layer, darken the whole BKD to try and help separate the subject, but I would look to also darkening the lower branch on the RHS of the log which is very bright.

The bird looks sharp to me and I like the pose and the perch. I agree a round of NR would improve the BG noise.

Sharpness is much better in this. I'm not bothered by the slight noise in the darker areas but I agree about the merger of the head with the background.

Steve, Richard
Here is a lightened version of the photo, I used your workflow Richard, works better for sharpness. TKS again.

The repost is an improvement, but there are some post-processing artifacts. Have you investigated the Refine Selection command in Photoshop?

Nice capture Claude. I wonder if using a fill-in flash will improve the details especially around the head area.
