Mom Has Dinner

This female fox has a den in our backyard and a few weeks ago brought this meal home to the pups she was weaning. It has been a fascinating thing to watch the kits grow (pictures of them to follow), and she has been a great mom. She never consumed any of this catch, but instead brought it to the pups, who figured things out pretty quickly.

Nikon D600, Nikon 70-200 f 2.8 with a 2X TC, effective focal length was 400mm and this image is cropped to about 60% of the original frame. ISO 560, 1/800 @f5.6. Even though this lens set up sometimes gets a bad rap, I'm quite pleased with this result.

Well done catching this fox in hunting mode, the lifted feet captures the implied motion. With a hungry fox family in your back yard it will likely have quite an impact on the smaller prey species in your neighbourhood.

Good focus point on the eye, and catching the leg movement. A very fine image. Whatever equipment that produces an image like this can't be bad. Congrats.

Hi Russell.
I think you have a great image even catching the movement of this fine looking Fox and the prey an added bonus.
Don't get " Even though this lens set up sometimes gets a bad rap" I'm going out to try mine as soon as I can If I can get results like this I will be very pleased.

How cool to be able to watch all of the closely. Great job catching movement, with two feet in the air and the prey in the mouth.

Thanks everyone, it is a rare privilege to have the natural world so close at hand, and that's one of the reasons why we moved here. This was the only day this year that afforded an opportunity like this. Most of the time I see them moving around, but have no chance at getting a shot. The kits have left the den, we haven't seen them for about two weeks now. Already looking forward to next spring!

Really nice moment captured Russ; Have to say I am envious. I haven't had kits to photograph in three years now. Glad to see someone is finding them though and sharing them with us. It gives me my fix of seeing these awesome animals.
