Navigational Hazard
by Mike Ramy
Navigational Hazard,
This fishing boat is sitting in the main channel on the St Johns River with darkness falling fast and not a single ‘Nav Light’ to be seen. This part of the river has speed boats, jet skis and supped up bass boats racing through at 50+ mph on a regular basis along with yachts and cruise ships up to 100+ feet in length. Navigation (Running) Lights are required on boats between sunset and sunrise and must have a visibility of 2 nautical miles. Anchor light is required when the vessel is not in motion with a visibility of 3 nautical miles. Coast Guard minimum equipment requirements vary with the size of your boat, type of propulsion, whether operated at night or in periods of reduced visibility, and, in some cases, the body of water on which it is used. The laws aside, common sense dictates that for your own safety and the safety of others on the water, you must be seen . . . Turn on the Nav Lights!
