Went out yesterday to experiment with some BIF focus settings. Our local osprey showed up just before the sun went down. Pretty harsh light for that late, but I like the contrast between one wing black and the other white. Can't say my focus settings were all I desired so I also got to experiment with some aggressive sharpening in post which seems to look fine at 1:1, but maybe a bit fake at lower zoom which seems weird to me, but maybe downsampling to posting sizes will get rid of that.

1/2000 (still some blur in the primaries on the downstroke), f/7.1, 80-400 @400, ISO 500, D7000. Took some saturation out of the sky - actually looked too blue (AZ - go figure).

Unusual light for as late as you describe. The light/dark wings don't work well for me, but that's probably my admittedly pedestrian tastes. Good eye contact. There's a slight halo, possibly a sharpening effect, on the leading edge of the lit wing.

John,
I also like the contrast between the wings in this shot. The detail looks fine on both of my monitors.
Sometimes you have to work with what you are given in the field, be it good or bad, to hopefully make a shot work, you made this shot work well in my opinion.

An unusual flight shot but it works. :toast:

Very nice shot, I like the shadow on the other wing, and the highlight on the one side. It's different and that's what it's all about! Super clear and sharp nice work!

I like the pose and look it's giving you. Would like better light on that wing.... Sharon
