Sleeping Deer

Here's another deer I happened upon sleeping this winter. This guy was sound asleep. Harldly moved except to breathe. Then I noticed an ear move, then nothing for a long time. This guy definitely was feeling quite safe. Curled up like a dog into front of the fireplace. I don't think he knew I was nearby until he finally lifted his head and looked ahead and left and right. Finally looked behind so assume he saw me. His reaction was to put his head down and go back to sleep. An interesting experience.

This is interesting to me in that maybe a predator wouldn't recognize it as a deer the way it is curled up and how the antlers mimic the surrounding branches.

Terrific the way the deer is in the sunlight, framed by the trees and shadows.

Peter,
Your outstanding Deer images are a joy to see and this is another one that is very interesting. This looks like a relaxing spot for a nap and as John mentioned, the way this buck blends into the surroundings while being out in the open is amazing and very well captured.

You must have a very unthreatening presence when around deer, Peter. Amazing to find this buck so soundly sleeping. . . but even when becoming aware of you, going back to sleep! Must have had a very tiring day. . .or maybe he's an older buck, feeling his age. . .or maybe he's unhealthy in some way. Whatever the reason, it is quite interesting behavior to observe. I like the way he is resting in the sunlight, with the trees and shadows surrounding him.
