I shot the Milky Way last year in White Pocket. This time, I decided to do it again in South Coyote Buttes.
Stan: I promise there is no more Milky Way shot this year

Nice milky way, I like the choice of black and white.

Dramatic. Very other-worldly. The B&W treatment works well for me. Great job.

Really like this with the black and white. Great detail in the rocks and sky. Shooting stars are always a plus too.

The Milky Way is so impressive and looks great here. All the texture in the foreground competes with the sky, though, imho.

I never saw any of Stan's comments, but it was probably something along the lines of the Milky Way shot becoming rather ubiquitous - the sky version of 'the big foreground rock', so to speak. If so, I agree - it is. It's something fun to do a few times but never changes much and doesn't offer the range of natural light exploration that most other types of photography does, which for me is a lot of what keeps it all new and interesting. Personally, I find the best times to shoot the MW is WITH the moon up, when it's just cresting the horizon and adding shape to the landscape's features. I think that this is a solid shot, but it's lacking that 3-D shape and light to bring it alive, particularly where the buttes meet the sky. It may just be compression, but he sky does look a tad soft to me too. That aside, I think the foreground lines are the best part of this one and I like the inclusion of the shooting star/plane/satellite/whatever as well (we'll just say shooting star). Lighting notwithstanding, I prefer the WP compositions because they offer a more fluid and unbroken flow to the background vs this which gets a tad complicated in the middle.

I think this is great and very mysterious.
Where the sky is near the horizon looks a little soft or weird from noise reduction? But otherwise a unique image!

Thanks, Marc. You are right (so does Stan), Milky Way is something that does not offer much variety. Shooting it once in a while in the right situation is probably enough. Nevertheless, it is so magnificent that I can't resist the urge to pull trigger :-)

Thanks, Mark. The moon is rising up when I shot the sky. I think that caused bottom of the sky a little weird. I will go back to see how to fix it. Thanks for suggestion.
