Wall of Palms

Large version available!

This is one of my favorite images from my trip. It just really fascinates me. When you are driving along the highway that circles the island, you pass a bridge that goes over a canyon that almost makes you have an accident because it's so beautiful. Steep walls hug a stream, and at the top of the canyon is a big waterfall. I came back to this spot and did some shooting. This was probably the most interesting part about the canyon. One wall had just enough of a slope to it that palm trees could still grow, but the wall was so steep, that when looking at it from the front, it appears to be a vertical wall of palm trees growing out of each other. I love it. I actually descended this hill to get to the stream and waterfall below. It was not easy, and I laughed later on when I went to make my way back up because I found a rope system someone had put in to help people get up and down this hill to go swim in the pool below the falls. Would have been nice to know, because as you can imagine, descending the hill you are looking at right here, was super sketch. Grab a tree, slide down the hill reaching for the next tree, pray, relief... ok next tree. Ugh!

Curious for your thoughts!

Another really fantastic image Ted. I'm a sucker for anything with vibrant greens, and the abstract nature of this scene is just fascinating. I feel like this needs to be viewed very very large to really appreciate all the fine details. The small version makes it look like a painting (which isn't a bad thing by any means). Really enjoying your images from Hawaii.

Way cool - Usually see this kind of image with birch or aspen out west so this is a refreshing view. Does have a filter effect look to it that makes it look a bit more fantisy thatn reality - not sure if that was intentional or no. Either way, I like it. Something a little off on the right upper boarder on the smaller version, like an extra boarder but not visible in the larger so I doubt it is the actual image. A BW rendition may take it further to the abstract but I think worth trying. Sliding down the hill sounds like way more fun anyway. :toast:

Ted,

The scale here is not making sense. I keep thinking ferns, but its trees. It is a fascinating photo for sure. I like it very much.

I think that this is quite gorgeous! Fine composition, delicious colors and nice, even light.
I would back off the Orton a bit to bring it back closer to reality. Nice work!

Nice capture, the orton effect feels a bit strong, but overall I like this one a lot. Well seen and executed.

thanks for the comments! I'll tweak the orton down a little bit, although I do really like the soft feel. Gives me the feeling that I had when I was there, everything wet, with warm temps. A bit steamy. This is starting to sound like something else...

Thanks Peter! I'm glad you like the pics. I'm pretty pleased with what I've got so far. I agree about vieing this large. The detail in those trees is so nice to look at.

Harry I did mess around with BW of this, and you're right, it goes further abstract really easily, especially when you play with the green and yellow colors. It's definitely cool looking. I might do a BW version later on.

Ted, This is outstanding! At first I had a similar reaction as Youssef and really it took a few moments coupled with your description that I finally figured it out. The "vertical wall of palm trees" did it. ;-)

The glow is very effective and I think were were successful in re-creating the "steam" look and feel you experienced.

A wonderful nature abstract, I love this!
