This was my first time visiting this location and I had intended for it to be a scouting trip. This was a nice surprise when I went through the files today. All the clouds actually vanished before sunset so I figured this one looked best in black and white. Thoughts?

Yeah, great clouds! I have yet to see clouds like this through the viewfinder :frown:

Maybe increasing the reds in the blue sky to darken it a little would make the clouds pop more. Only if that's something you would want, of course.

I'm a sucker for that kind of water pattern on the rock. Great find :) Might be tempted to punch the contrast on the sky a bit. B/w seem to be able to get away with more of that, but personal preference as always. Woop!

Thanks guys, I'll give the sky a bit more punch. I'm always afraid of over-processing stuff...

I think this is very good in B&W as it's all about dynamic range that the water creates in its different forms and motions. What I always especially like in images like this, and this one especially, is the dynamic relationship between clouds and running water; both part of a continuous cycle of change, driven by the sun, and also how while it may appear in the moment that the land and the rocks are dominant, over time it is the water that ultimately prevails.

In your composition, the waves are flowing towards us, the viewers, and I think that helps to make the image engaging.

Lace,

This is well seen and captured. Great sky indeed! And because of those great clouds I think you did an excellent job with your chosen composition using good proportions and letting the foreground surf be a nice anchor/base, but not taking completely away from the sky.

I don't know how much more contrast or darkening of the blue you need, but I don't think much. No nits otherwise. Thanks for posting!

I love how the clouds and water mimic each other. Way to go. :toast:

Nice choice for B+W; emphasizes the movement and pattern in water and sky. Really nice! :toast:

A great combination of the flowing water and the cloud texture. As the others have suggested, I think increasing the contrast in the sky would be quite beneficial. This can be done through the application of a yellow or red digital filter. To me, being able to make that kind of a statement is what makes black and white photography special. Terrific photo.
