Hidden Butterfly + Repost

It's been a while since I posted here. This is one I took several years ago in a garden in Florida. I found it looking through old pictures for images I have previously overlooked. It made a better impression on me this time around.

I'm curious if that's a butterfly or a moth and what kind. Also interested in flower ID if anyone knows.

All C&C welcome as always. I don't mind nits and criticism.

Canon 200L Prime @2.8

Thanks,

Hi Brad. I like the hidden gem of the butterfly. Sorry that I cannot help with the ID. I wonder if you crop up a bit and some from the right if the image would be stronger.

Can't help with the IDs, Brad, I'm afraid. I do have a certain liking for the unconventionality of this - it doesn't on the whole use compositional devices, it's free and natural. The notion of the hidden butterfly I also like, taking the grasses as the slightly obscuring element. One thought, though, would be to suggest possibly a darkening vignette to give some emphasis to the insect and the flower, which I suspect might make the image stronger. Only a thought !!

Brad, this is very different and has an unusual look to the scene, although, at the same time obviously very natural in it's setting. I really like this capture......nice work...!

Thanks for the comments. Here is a rework based on suggestions. I cropped some and added some vignetting.

I like the crop, but not the vignette. The flower is certainly some variety of lily. Definitely a butterfly. Butterflies have long antennae, moths have short feathery antennae. Since it is on a flower, presumably nectaring, it is a butterfly with a proboscis. Moths do not have a proboscis, and survive off of fat reserves stored during the larval stage.

The colors are nice and everything is sharp. For my taste I would like to have the grasses in the foreground gone and the Butterfly and lily closer and more the center of interest.

Brad: This is a white peacock butterfly. I wish the view of it was unobstructed but so it goes. Good to have you back and looking forward to more of your work. >=))>

PS: I edited your title to reflect the repost. You can do that yourself from the edit link on the thumbnail and is a good idea to let others know you've posted an edited version.

Thanks for identifying the white peacock butterfly Bill. It's a bit hard to see in these small pics, but the butterfly is actually perched on the shoot of grass facing the camera. If memory serves, that was as close as I could get without getting off the walkway, and that was at 200mm and 1.6 crop camera.

Lovely composition, Brad. I do wish the two grass leaves intersecting the butterfly and flower weren't there. It would really be neat if the main flower were in as sharp focus as the butterfly. No help for the id on either I'm afraid.
