Crater Lake

This is just and amazing geological phenomenon. 200 million years ago the volcano erupted in two stages to create a 1,9700 foot deep lake that is the fourth clearest lake in the world.

Many years ago a helicopter with three men from California toured the crater and got too close to the water, landing gear hit the water and crashed. Since the water temp is a constant 39 degrees, they were toast. They are still at the bottom. This is a two stitch horizontal pano in PS5.

This is a very nice image from crater lake. I really like the pov you chose and the inclusion of wizard island. We were there around the first of May when there were 12 ft snow banks everywhere. Nice job! Chet

Thanks Chet. The East road around the lake was still closed due to snow drifts so this was it for me. :wavey:
Stunning place :jump:

Great view, Rick. At first look at the thumbnail, I thought it was taken from the air. The snow really helps this a lot, adding definition to overall shape.
Thanks for the info -- amazing place.

This is such an amazing place. I like the wide view you captured here, Rick. My only suggested would be to brighten the snow in the LLC (although I realize it is probably actually pretty gray this time of year). I had no idea about the constant water temp. Interesting fact.

Interesting info & anecdote Rick..
There was probably a guy with a camera on board, asking the pilot to get a bit lower for the shot
Very nice! :toast:

Rick, That is a very cool view! It does almost feel like an aerial shot. Thanks for the info too. Nice work.

Rick,
Great POV, I like how the small islands lead from the shore on out to Wizard. The clouds also add wonderful detail. I've been to Crater twice, once with weather like your image, and the second with low clouds and cold. Both trips were stunning!

Howard,

I hope he had a Nikonis underwater camera but at 39 degrees he had about 30 seconds to get his shot before it was all over. The story I got at Safeway in Ashville was there was no rescue because 1900 feet was a bit too deep to for and recover bodies.
