Grandather in the Fog

This was an early morning shot about 15 minutes before the sun came up. It's at one of the top peaks of Grandfather Mountain, NC - taken from Attic Window looking across to Calloway Peak. The wind was howling & blowing the fog across the peak. I took the shot in May 2009.

Canon 5DII, 24-105mm @ 28mm, 0.8 sec, f16, ISO 100.

Lot of power in this image. Well processed. Is where you're standing part of Grandfather Mountain? I ask because I thought they were only open during the daytime. Was curious how you got up there pre-dawn. Thanks.

Michael,
They have a photo workshop the weekend after Memorial Day each year. They allow camping on the mountain that one event. You can take off from the upper parking lot around 4 am & make it to the peak before sunrise. It's an interesting hike in the dark!

Love it! A lot of energy in this capture. I also might crop a little of the empty space at top. Very nice!

16 x9 crop keeping the bottom would work for sure... Love the captured forces of nature feel. :toast:

Looks like some fun condition to be at the top of a ridge with a camera.

Is that a lighter halo type thing just above the trees on the right? Looks like it could be toned down a tad to match the surroundings, possibly. Really like the mood here.

I really like the movement and color of the clouds. It seems that I can just about hear the wind. I agree with the drop suggestions to help keep the eye on the drama. Any chance of more foreground to anchor the viewer to the scene?

Incredible energy, the trees look like they are tossing in a gale. You've packed a lot of drama into this one image. No nits. this is excellent

Wick,

Awesome! This really, really captures the wind and environment. The way the trees up front are all pointing really shows us the long term effects of the wind blowing over the ridges. The fog and and mood are just terrific.

Very nice image Wick. The clouds really make this one dramatic. My only nit is the bright fog on the right hand side. I might consider burning down the highlights in the fog there to make it match the rest of the scene...should be an easy fix. Overall this is excellent!

Very dramatic Wick! I like the mix of flowing fog and static clouds.
