I had a very cooperative Dragonfly and he didn't seem to mind me or camera. Not the best exposure but the closest I've ever gotten to these.

Olympus E-5
50-200mm @ 200mmFL
1/200sec @f10
-1.3 ev
tripod
ISO 100

Cropped to approx 60% of FF mainly to emphasis the only sharp area.

Nice details where they count Charlie, looks like maybe a twelve spotted skimmer?
Great head-on portrait, like that BG too :toast:

At 200mm without extension tubes you probably weren't tremendously close, hard to get that incredible detail without a macro. The shadow is tough, I assume you already tried to do some shadow enhancement in post processing. I really like the low POV and BG.

I like the head on, nearly eye level perspective, Charlie. Great view of the bifold looking wings.

Good detail and a novel view. I wish the highlights on the eyes were less bright.

I believe that is what it was, Howard.

I think I was about 4 feet from this DF. I did significant adjustments and felt this was about as good as I could get.

Hey, Phil, you should have seen those highlights before processing.

Very nice head-on view, Charlie. I've got these skimmers as occasional visitors to my pond and they're hard to get close to. You did well.
