Raven on dead tree
by Roger Kirchen
I photographed this Common Raven (Corvus corax) in February of this year in Jasper National Park. Even though Ravens are ubiquitous, I find it difficult to get a clean shot of them. This one here sat still long enough for just this exposure and (and a couple of blurred flight shots when it flew off).
I like the pose and the stark dead tree with the bleached branches. I find that it illustrates the symbol of ill omen and death that is often associated with Ravens. I have tried to give the image a more "ominous" look by selectively working some areas.
Note that that there is something reddish on the tree and also a speck on the bird's bill. The top of the tree was well out of human reach, so I assume that it might be a food cache of this Raven. Or a food cache of another bird, as Ravens are know to raid food caches.
Canon 7D, Sigma 150-500 at 500 mm, f/9.0, ISO 640, 1/60 sec, braced against SUV window, natural light, PP in LR5, CS6 and NIK.
All comments are much appreciated. Thanks for looking and for your comments to my other photos. Roger.
