Poppy II

Another poppy. This one had bright red and whimsical petals. Similar effort to block the dirt using a black drop cloth. Natural light under clouds at mid-day. My wife says, "Eewww...too bright....too red." I say, that's close...honestly...to what it looked like.

nikon d800e with 100mm zeiss and polarizer, mirror up, cable, tripod.

Now that is one radiant red poppy! Great detail in the flower. I like the pattern of leaves behind the flower and find myself wishing for more DOF. The black drop cloth sure works great; saves a lot of time at the computer!

Surprised that you or anyone else hasn't mentioned the "heart" shape of the poppy. It is what first drew my eye. It would certainly present itself for something needing a valentine theme. Beyond that, I like your choice of a square cropping, but the background is a little uneven between the greenery and black cloth. Nothing whatsoever could you have done about that, but it does attract, or perhaps distract my eyes a little. Your crafting of the image is as good as it gets. Fine detail, ideal dof, and nothing is too bright. Nothing appears to be clipping. The red is by far the most predominant color here, but the green, the dark blue center, and even the purple bud all compliment the red. I detect a yellow warming all over, which to me, is the perfect hue seen on my calibrated monitor. Amazing. Just the right amount of sharpness and contrast.

A side note - Being a formally trained musician, I often look at images as if they were musical. And the analogy I get from this image is like a group of singers whose pitch is perfectly in tune within their harmonies. And that's what I see here - the colors are so perfectly in tune with each other. In either medium, when things are in tune, they "snap" together with such a bond that they become inseparable.

Great looking poppy, Ken. It certainly is red, but some blooms are. I'm seeing detail in almost all areas, so I'd say your saturation is ok.

Beautiful, Ken. Not the easiest flower to photograph. The heart shape + color sets this one apart. :toast:

Hi Ken :wavey: An extraordinary composition, capturing the delightful heart shape and center. Love the stunning color and detail, the only nit is where are the folds on the drop cloth? just kidding  :toast:
