This is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind re black and white when I commented on your previous post. And also, referring to my previous comments, here it's obvious that it's the tree and not us that's leaning.

I love the way the snow defines this little island of chaos and character. And the sky is wonderful. To me it's often the sky that makes or breaks a black and white landscape. Good sky. And the two larges bare trees, seem like fighters, recoiling from one another.

Great tones and dynamism! I'm sure St. Ansel is nodding in appreciation.

Rick,

I think this is a much better image overall than your previous one. I failed to comment, but agree with other comments that the snow in that one at a minimum wasn't helping or didn't add anything. Here in this one the snow is a better support, helping to frame the cluster of trees. I also like the darkness of the sky above. Excellent contrast and tonal range throughout.

Please don't be disappointed in this comment, Rick, as I find difficult most times to relate to black and white images. I'll just say that my experience in looking at this was that cropping away some of the sky (heresy!) helped to balance the scene for me so that my focus was more easily drawn to, and fixed on, the intrigue of the trees.

I like the composition of this image. Here again is where commenting on an image is very subjective and personal preference plays a large part. In deference to the other comments, to me the contrast is a little harsh. That has got to be personal taste because Lon thought it was good and He certainly is a much better landscape photographer and artist then I.

The strong light makes the contrast sing in this one, Rick! Excellent conversion. :toast:

The snow does frame the mound of interest well! Those are some really cool trees... The only thing I'd mention is some of the real bright spots on a few branches could be toned down a hair (I am not viewing this on a very good monitor, btw)? I like this B+W. :wavey:
