King of the Mountain
by Dennis Plank
Well, of the of fencepost behind our pond, anyhow. We put this fencepost up when we put the pond in and it's made a better perch every year (though it does take some cloning out of bird droppings). I loved the way this male American Goldfinch posed on it the other evening.
7D, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Black Widow on RRS legs, f8, 1/3200, iso 800, Av mode with -2/3 stop exposure compensation to avoid blowing out the yellows. The highiso (for this body) was because I was hoping for take-off shots (no luck on that). Processed in CS6 with noise reduction using Neat Image. Minimal sharpening and a touch of exposure increase plus the above noted cloning were the only adjustments. Cropped to 8.7MP. Taken June 15th at 7:50 pm.

Well Done . . .
The colors and details are great.
It would be even better if the bird's tail was visible. A great image anyway.
