Silent Watchers

here's an image that had been lying around for some time before i started working on it a few weeks ago. i somehow must have overlooked its potential after the initial import - or maybe i just didn't feel like it was worth the time to work on the blending...

anyways, this is a twilight shot of fitz roy, cerro torre, the rio de las vueltas canyon and our neighbouring planet mars. it's a blend of three exposures (stars, sky, foreground) taken within an hour.

more technical info and some background about the image on my blog.

Parque Nacional los Glaciares, Patagonia, Argentina
Canon 5DMKII, EF 17-40 @ 23mm
3 exposures blended

btw, i did not alter the size of mars here...

best,
joerg

Beautiful Image Joerg! Would love to see a large print of this.

Curious as to what it might look like with those hillsides just a bit darker.

Technically I think the exposure, light levels and blending are perfect. The glow on the peaks is lovely. However I'm finding the sky dwarfing those peaks to the point of puniness that the landscape seems somewhat irrelevant.

Joerg,

A beautifully captured nightscape. I like the inclusion of the river/canyon and you did well with the blend. I suppose one could play around with the light levels on the landscape and darken them slightly, but its not really a big concern for me. My comment would be to actually darken the night sky to a more "midnight blue." I guess the peaks are rather small here, but given the pov and distance, it's all rather natural looking.

Good job here, I would just shoot for a more cobalt type blue in the sky; looks closer to daylight than middle of the night, if that makes sense.

Very pretty. I like the way the river winds it's way into the bg.

Fantastic image Joerg! One minor suggestion. The present shot is a little top heavy, I'd like to see more of the bottom part. Maybe a slight crop may help? Otherwise, I love the processing and the blend!

Gorgeous color and light. Very well done! I hope you have some of less sky and more mountains with this light.

Excellent image. The composition feels very cohesive and I all of the key elements--river, mountains, and stars--work well together. I do think it would be worthwhile to experiment a bit with cropping some off the top, perhaps helping to address Kah Kit's comment and others.

I love the results but agree with Morris and others that more foreground and less sky might improve the image. Well done :toast:

kah kit,
that exactly was my point. the idea here was to change the way these massive mountains are perceived. while usually they dominate the landscape, here they have to step aside for something even bigger. i reckon that this may not work as well on screen as it does in a big print.

since this is a blend of three shots taken over the course of around an hour, i did not have the chance to experiment with different compositions. however i do have another shot, that was taken shortly before sunrise on the same morning. it's a vertical composition showing a more traditional sky/land ratio and nice glow - it doesn't have stars in it though. i'll post it within the next days.

Beautiful mood and interesting scale here. I like the way the river complements the sky
