Reaching Up

These mountains have always looks so incredible when viewed in pictures, but are WAY more majestic and enormous in person! The vertical rise is breathtaking...

This is an aerial shot of the peaks, taken a few weekends ago, early morning, after a few days of interesting weather. Small and medium clouds were drifting around the mountains (not exactly shown here... ), making for a jaw-dropping flight. I was shooting through the glass, though, and with the usual bumps that come with flying through mountain air, it was a bit challenging to come away with sharp photos, and also with the comp I wanted. I should also mention that I cloned out a horrid reflection.

For me, this was just begging for a B+W conversion. Edited in RAW, I adjusted the usual, and finally did some tweaking in CS5. Here's some more details...

Canon 60d 55-250mm @ 55mm
ISO 100 --- f/13 --- 1/500sec --- handheld --- no filters

Comments/Critiques welcome, and VIEW LARGE, please.

I like the perspective quite a bit, and b&w was a great choice. The larger version appears to be much sharper.
I think you came away with a real fine image! Now, where is this place?

Oh, yes... How could I forget! This is from the Teton range in Wyoming, although I'm not sure what exact peak this is.

Awesome sharpness and texture, impressive you got this through a window. 55mm is wider than I would have expected for a shot like this -- even with a crop factor. You must have been quite close!

Nathan, quite the perspective of a great mountain. Agreed, B&W is the real deal here. Fantastic contrast. I would rename it "Grand Teton," an iconic name for sure. Cuz that's what it is, nuff said....

Up close and personal. This is a very strong image and a good BW subject. Very well done, Nathan.

Nathan,

The larger view rocks! Excellent tonal range and great job keeping detail in almost all the snow patches; clean whites, blacks and mid tones. Excellent detail and sharpness through out. An aerial? So this must have been a helicopter tour? Or your flight in and out of Jackson? ;-) No matter, excellent job with this.

Lon--- Thanks! I'm actually in flight training, so I took this on a trip up around the Jackson Hole area. Don't worry, I wasn't the one flying when I took this.

Nathan, This is a great looking b&w image. I especially like the larger version with the sharpness and wonderful contrast. Really this is quite an amazing view. Your conversion what a great choice here. I remember my flight training very well and how much there was to learn, and loved it!

That's great, Nick! Nothing like flying, for sure. You have your PPL?
