Prairie Hoodoo

This is from the Paint Mines Interpretive Park east of Colorado Springs. The area was used by Native Americans to "mine" color for decorating themselves and their possessions.

C&C always welcome, and thanks for looking,

The plants in the foreground makes this image work for me. I like how the tall plant parallels the hoodoo and leads the eye. Nice sky, too. :toast:

I like this. There's something non-conventional about the comp that I'm having trouble pinpointing, however, I like it! Great sky to go with this unique landscape...

A very pleasing image, Morris. I like the colors and find the exposure and processing to be spot on. Has a kind of Bisti look about it. I also like the sky. Well done. Chet

Always enjoy these formations like this one, Morris. Amazing to see these in the field too. The understanding of how most of them are formed, or better yet how they are protected from the elements typically by a solitary flat rock crowning the top is a unique site to see. The overall vertical composition with the FG plant arrangement works just right on this capture.
A very nice find and capture here.

Morris, I like the comp you came up with here which makes for a really interesting view. A very nice natural look that makes me feel like I'm right there. I think I could see darkening this just a bit, or maybe a small curves adjustment, but not sure if that would make it any better, just my first thoughts looking at this. Nice work capturing this very interesting subject...and I do like it!

nicely done, been there once in the dead of winter with lots of snow and no snowshoes, great angle to contrast the clouds

Thanks, guys.
Nick, I'll check that.
Mike, I've done it in the winter right after a blizzard, too, and I was just glad that Stan Rose was breaking ground ahead of me all afternoon. We couldn't park close because the road was closed going in, so it almost killed this old man.

Like almost everything about it. My only nit is I think the FG plant is too centered. I think I would have offset that a bit but this is a gorgeous image as presented. nice job!

whoa! unique comp here. It looks 1000x better than I expected through the thumb. perhaps a little more contrast in midtones the landscape would give this more drama

What an interesting perspective, Morris. Makes all the difference and takes this from ordinary, good photography, to way past the next level. Just love the play of light through the landscape. If this was midday, this is proof that great photos can be made at that time of day.

Thanks, Catherine. While it wasn't mid-day, but about 7:30, it doesn't take long for the light in Colorado to get strong. The altitude, I believe.

Morris,

I like this quite a lot! The cotton-ball sky really pulls this together for me. I think someone mentioned a curves adj, dropping the brightness a tad, but really, nothing wrong with the exposure here. Excellent perspective and the line up of the tall plant and hoodoo work wonderfully.

Lovely pale colors and very interesting composition and subject matter. I like the plant in the center and the rock formation just off center behind it. Sky is great too!
