Summer wildflowers and sunset alpenglow at Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument, June 2013.

Initially, the conditions on this particular evening were not looking very promising. The thick clouds on the western horizon were blocking all of the direct light from hitting the mountain. Just a few moments before the sun actually set, it popped out from beneath the clouds and hit the mountain with some nice magenta alpenglow. The light only lasted about about a minute, but luckily I had my comp all picked out and was just waiting for the light.

Nikon D800, Nikkor 14-24mm, no filters
7 image blend for DOF and dynamic range
1 image for the sky and mountain, 1.6 sec at f/16, ISO 100
6 images for the foreground flowers, 3-4 sec each at f/16, ISO 100 (luckily there was almost no wind, which allowed me to use a low ISO and long shutter speeds)

All comments and critiques are always appreciated. Please check out the larger version. The colors will look best on a calibrated monitor using Firefox or Safari.

Dang that is an epic view Scott! Love the dense flowers and the light and weather seemed to cooperate quite nicely for you. Definitely gotta make it up here at some point next year.

Cool photo! It's not often we see shots from this far west on the ridge. Looks like there's some great flowers to shoot over there!

awesome shot, scott! love that sweet glow on the mountain.

judging from the band of clouds in the background the image looks slightly tilted to the right - could be an illusion, though..

This is a really beautiful scene! Very well composed IMO. The foreground flowers and mountainside seem underexposed to me. I used the color picker in Firefox, and there's a lot of blacks (or near black) in there. This is before sunset, so it seems that it should be a bit brighter than it is.

This needs to be viewed large! Excellent. Despite the dark presentation (which looks very realistic), the image really pops. Beautiful.

Beautiful Scott. The FG seems a little dark on my uncalibrated work monitor, but the image itself is wonderful. Love the light on the peak.

Beautiful scene Scott. To me it seems titled slightly clockwise, and on my monitor the foreground is a tad dark, minor stuff though. Large version rocks! :toast:

Excellent Scott.!!!

I viewed this both on IE and Mozilla side by side on a calibrated monitor, to be truthful I don't see much difference in color, its so minute.

This is flat out gorgeous, Scott. This has some sweet light, wonderful colors and great sense of depth. :toast: My only suggestion would be just a bit of CCW rotation. The large version really shines.

Beautiful scene, so nicely composed and blended. I'm going to stick my neck out, though, and say that the purple flowers seem either too saturated or too dark. The whole image looks too purple on my monitor. Unless you really love purple. Everything else is perfect.

Very nice job on this Scott!!! Just the type of atmosphere and light I'd love to get!

Maybe just a tad too purple for me. But then again, I have not calibrated my monitor for a while, being on the road and viewing from a laptop...

Beautiful field of flowers, and the arrangement with the peak is right on. The cyans (green foliage) seem a little oversat. for my taste and the midground too heavy with magenta. Maybe it is the blacks that need a slight adjustment. Probably more of a processing difference than a problem with your processing. Great view and blend.

Gorgeous color and a spectacular scene that is very well composed. Excellent depth. I could seem some brightening of the foreground, but not much. :toast:

One minute of light beautifully captured here. It's an amazing one Scott. Can I just ask how did you blend the shots together ? Any special technique ?

While the wildflowers and alpenglow grab the viewer's attention I think the clouds that hover over the landscape along the left side of the frame add a nice element that really makes me enjoy every square inch of this. Beautiful work, Scott.
