Fresh 12-Spotted Skimmer

This male twelve-spotted skimmer has not yet developed his white tail, but he's starting to get his white wing spots. I shot it in a local field as a "field test" of a new camera.

I have not been shooting much lately, but I took an hour to try out my new 5D Mark III with some quick hand-held shots. Since a magazine said this camera has "excellent" image quality up to ISO 12,800, I did not hesitate to shoot at ISO 5,000. After this experience, I will hesitate to do that, but I'll know that it's possible (with some significant noise reduction) if I really need the speed and depth-of-field. I decided to keep this because I like the composition, but the NR makes it look a little "smoother" than I usually like insect pictures. What do you think of the experiment?

Canon 5D3; Canon 100-400mm.
1/640 sec. @ f/9; ISO 5,000
hand-held
Cropped from horizontal (ca. 50%)
Noise reduction in ACR, plus more NR with Topaz DeNoise plug-in for background.

Looks amazingly good to me for 5000 iso, Wayne. Excellent comp/pose. I still see some noise, but the DF has super detail, and the overall softness of the image is appealing to me. :toast:
