Solitary Swimmer

I came across a flock of American White Pelicans last week while driving through Southern Alberta's Cypress Hills. The sun was quite low already which made a nice contrast between this solitary pelican and its surroundings.

Comments, critique and suggestions always welcome.

Tech stuff: Canon 1D4, 100-400mm @ 400mm, f/5.6, 1/1000, ISO 640, spot meter, manual exposure, hand held.

Rick, nice concept, to be honest, I feel the scale is a bit too much for depicting the pelican. Am ok with the spot metering and getting the bg dark, I too tend to do these kind of compositions.

Beautiful scene well rendered. I'd love to see this blown up to about 3X5 feet.

Rick,

I like this very much! Great use of space and tone. Exposure/processing is right on, at least for me.

Seems to me if this is a straight shot, this would work in other galleries too.

Well done.

I sure like how this "spotlights" the pelican and the overall minimalist feeling with lots of empty space and the subtle hints of background. I do wonder how this would look (feel) if the bird were about twice as big, but you clearly had run out of lens.
