Cavalry Drill

I got a new camera body, Canon 7d, and wanted to do some experimenting. We were at Ft. Laramie National Monument in Wyoming. for the 4th. They had all kinds of activities. One of them was a group of women doing some Cavalry horse drills. I wanted to try a slow shutter speed and panning to see what I could do. Here is one of the images I came up with. Thanks for your comments and critiques.

Canon 7D
Sigma 17-70
Aperture Priority
Shutter 1/8
Aperture f20
ISO 100
70mm
Polarizer
Very little post processing in PSE9
Cropped to 80% of original

I like this one very much. You managed to captue a sense of movement with the pan. Sometimes, I think sharpness is over rated! This took some previsualization skills and you pulled it off well.

Very neat affect. I could see maybe cropping down some of the unneeded sky.

FYI - The term you're looking for is "Cavalry," which are horse-mounted soldiers. "Calvary" is the location just outside of Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified. While most people do mistakenly pronounce and/or spell each the same, there actually IS a difference in both pronunciation and spelling.

Thanks Michael for the correction. Unfortunately my spell checker could not read my mind and tell me I had the right spelling for the wrong word.

Richard,

This is a really neat image. Sometimes when an image is 100 blurred, it bothers my eyes because they can't focus on something. The first rider is just sharp enough for this not to happen. It definitely shows motion.

I like the technique. It illustrates the movement very well.

I could very easily see this in a pano comp, great job panning with the near rider and horse well focused.
Nice work Richard! :toast:
