Loon Wing Flap

Loon performing a beautiful wing flap on Lac Le Jeune near Kamloops, BC. This was my first time photographing these special birds -and I had a blast. The colors, textures, lines and that sound - intoxicating.

Shot while laying flat on a deck boat using a ground pod and a Wimberley head.

Canon 1Dx, 600 ll, 1/800, f/10, ISO 800 (Pretty much my base ISO with the 1Dx to optimize ss).

Very nice. Love the spread wings. Great job on the whites.

Nice work on the exposure Randy. Especially considering it looks like you had a lot of reflective light to contend with. The wingspread adds a lot to this image for me.

Very nice shot of a typical Loon pose & BG. Loons are hard to get right if the light isn't perfect & you have maintained detail in the blacks & whites. The head may be just a touch over-lightened as it usually is slightly darker than this (but there is some variation). Good work!

Nice catch, Randy. Looks like you had some pretty nice light and that's a wonderful pose. The head looks just a tiny bit soft to my eye-maybe a touch of sharpening there?

Great pose, Randy. The water reflections on the loon's breast make this image special. The image looks a little soft overall. Maybe not enough SS?
