Out in the Lamar Valley one morning I noticed this Bison walking along beneath a nice looking aspen stand. Couldn't resist snapping a few frames

Would be interested in hearing your thoughts..

Hi Zack. Nicely seen, I like the idea of the large mammal being shown as a tiny part of a big landscape. On my monitor the colors seem a bit flat, perhaps due to some post processing to reduce contrast? I'm having a bit of difficulty trying to understand if the dark strip at the bottom is due to a shadow, or if this is the edge of an embankment, having never been to to the Lamar.

Zack,

Great to see such a good example of an "in environment" image :toast:

I like the bison in its environment. Colours and light are perfect.

Wow, great animalscape Zack! Immense sense of scale and you did a great job isolating a bunch of trees. Although ideally the cut off ones in the upper section of the frame would not be there at all, but that was of course beyond your control. :toast:

Due to the light the colors look slightly washed out, but I think this works to your advantage, increasing the contrast between the bison and shaded ridge and the background. Nice one.

The Lamar is one of my favorite places and your image really does it justice. The exposure and colors are right on for the time of day and place. Great textures on the hillside behind the aspens.

I like this just fine. I think I would add some saturation/contrast to just the greens and see how it felt!

Thanks everyone for the comments. Here's a repost with some added punch and some color adjustments. I believe I originally processed this on my laptop which is why it seems a bit flat, thanks goes to Justin Krug for the helpful critique via email.

Which do you prefer?

My vote goes to the repost, the added punch to the colors looks more natural to me.

Love the comp on this Zach. When I first looked at this, my thought was it looked washed out, so I scrolled and saw the repost. The repost really makes a huge difference. Nice re-work.

Congrats on the POTW! As I've said earlier, I am a sucker for these kind of 'subject small in the frame' scenes for they portray the perfect perspective, and you've got this spot on!
