The desolation is captured perfectly here, Rick. The FG plant/tree makes an excellent anchor to the wide open area in the BG.

Excellent Rick! You've captured and presented this area beautifully - the b&w is a great choice here to enhance the harshness of the environment. The contrast and tonal range is excellent too.
The only suggestion I have would be to darken the sky. Assuming this is rgb, you could go to the blue channel and tweak that. Not a big deal, but something to consider.

I like this a lot Rick. Wonderful B&W conversion. With regars to the presentaion, I might be tempted to crop the sky out so the focus is more on the tree. Lon's suggestion would also refocus attention to the lovely textures and details in the tree.

This is a much better way to convey desolation than a previous attempt. This is a fine b&w image, and I think that Lon's suggestion has some merit. Nice work, Rick!

Looks very desolate and hot Rick. The repost is very nice and I like the tones and comp in this. Suits B&W nicely. Well done.

The B&W repost is perfect for showcasing the rugged desolation of this area, Rick. I love the character of that FG tree and it makes a great anchor for the scene. Beautiful image.

Your large view looks great Rick!
I especially like your POV that shows the FG bush/tree, and larger scene so well..
Cool 'Badlands' image, looks very nice in B&W
