Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted August 26, 2013547 views19 comments
This is a close up look at something that I found in my backyard yesterday and am enjoying exploring the effects of refraction. I'm curious to see if anyone can ID this, but more interested in opinions about the image quality. Are the fine lines a problem? What about the high contrast and overall darkness? This image is about life size. (5D3, 100mm macro L + 36mm ET, 1/160s, f/18, iso 800)

One of those blasted plastic covers that are so hard to remove to get at the item inside-it must be on grass covered with dew?? Image quality: could be a bit sharper but otherwise, it looks fine to me.

I haven't a clue what this is, Mark, but it's a fascinating abstract. I think the brightness could be brought up a little, but you don't want to blow out the detail in the high values. I agree that it could be a bit sharper. The lines don't bother me.

I'm curious as to what this is.

As a basic abstract, and not knowing what it is at all, this works just fine, Mark. Definitely has the appearance of something metallic, but being a nature forum I'm assuming it's natural and not man made. Of course metallic could be just a mineral object too. Maybe the back of a bug of some sort?.......signed: me-B-clueless.....

Mark, What ever it is it is pretty darn cool looking. It does make me think of an insect but not sure what it really is.

I like it. The fines lines are interesting.

If this is about life sized then I don’t think this is an insect part.

If found in the back yard I would say this is water with some sort of oily substance mixed in. The oil and bubbles come from decaying plant matter.

Probably from your pond, definitely has water on it, and that's as far as I go, in any case, excellent abstract Mark. Have to keep looking till you give away the secret, definitely curious.

Mike got it, clearly speaking from experience. This is a belly section from a shed snake skin that I found in the stream between my two ponds on Sunday. For this image, it's floating on the stream held in place by small rocks at three corners. The moving water may account for some of the softness, which is why I used the high iso. The strongest colors seem to show in the strongest light, with this picture taken near noon.

Cool abstract. I never would have guessed what it is. Most of the snakes I see are of the human variety.

Mark,

LOVE the iridescent colors! I was going to guess a fly's wings or something like that. Very, very cool.

You didn't mention the size of the snake skin, but I imagine it's not very big, shot with a macro lens, etc. I'm going to go ahead and move this to the Macro gallery. Definitely nature related, and definitely macro in scope/size. Hope this makes sense. Let us know if you have any questions.

Great image!
