The Odyssey

One of my last and favorite images from this summer. I literally waited 5 years for this shot. I scouted a similar one when I started pursuing photography, but I didn't know enough at the time to do what I wanted. Luckily, I was able to make it back. It is a three day trek over 30 miles and ~11,000ft of elevation change.

This was shot in the twilight of the setting sun literally as the milky way was first visible. That is why there is still blue in the sky and illumination on the ground. The land is a composite of 3 ~5s images for focus blending with the camera pointed down. I then rotated the camera up 90 degrees and shot the sky with a 30s exposure and manually aligned/blended them in post.

Beautiful shot Colin, I love it. I guess I didn't realize until now that Milky Way shots are often a little heavily done for me, which this looks more "natural" to my eye. The alignment of rocks works well also. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful Image. I could see maybe toning down the blues just a little. Great work though. :toast:

Very nice image, Colin. The blue color works well to evoke a sense of vastness and solitude. Interesting story as well. Thanks for sharing. Chet

This looks really nice, but I do agree about toning down the blue a bit. I like that the galaxy is not over done. Looks like it was great night for star gazing!

Woohoo! Great stuff. Comp wise it's a bit centered for me....wanting to take a couple of steps to the left and have that rock in the middle fg be a leading line from front right to center pointing at the gap in the mtn and sky....

Great work w/ the post and capture. Killer light.

Maybe a little too blue for my tastes, but the sky and peaks look fantastic. Your blend looks flawless to me - especially considering the huge movement of the lens to create this. Super job with visualizing this and putting it together. The 3 day trip must have been pretty outstanding too!

Edit - I might clone/crop the small snow field on the far right edge.

Nice work. Always love to see when a photog pre-visualizes something, then makes it come to fruition. It does look a tad on the too blue side, but that's a personal preference as much as anything.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I'm not sure what everyone means by "too blue." Is it because you think the blue itself is too intense? Or that you don't think the a scene like this should be blue? Because it is not a night scene. It is a twilight scene. The sky was blue, not black, which made the land blue as well.

Thanks for the input.

Just dreamy and celestial! :toast:

I'd be tempted to tone the blue down a hair in PS color mode.
