An Awaking Whisper

Sparks lake with early morning mist. Was all finished up shooting the last shot I posted, and was about to walk back to my car when I saw the potential for this long shot across the lake. Pulled the gear back out and snapped it up. I'm glad I stopped because sometimes I get lazy and think, 'naahhhh, it'll suck!' But I really like this image. A nice break from the complex foreground, background, fireball sky shot.

Here is a LARGE version with lowered highlights in the mist as suggested in the comments below.

Great image and I really like your processing on this Ted. Like the layers here but the mist is what makes it for me. Just great. :toast:

Such a wonderful mood Ted. The main thing that catches my eye is the way the white trucks reach out to you; just gorgeous! Composition is perfect as well. My only nit is that the fog/mist seems a little on the bright side and distracts a bit. I might consider burning the mist down a wee bit to allow the trunks to shine even more. None the less, this is superb! I'm really glad you left this in color too, although i would love to see a B&W version as well.

I can see why you really like this image, Ted. The mood and atmosphere in this scene is outstanding. My only suggestion would be to tone down the mist just a bit as it looks a touch hot. Glad you did not get lazy on this one.

Excellent all the way around. Great mood created by the mist. I would second Ed's suggestion on the mist, but pretty dang minor. It is a beauty.

Hey Bill, this actually isn't in color, it's monochrome, with a blue tint to it.

ted, nice work. i'd prefer a straight b&w image or, at least, one in which the toning was more subtle. the contrast in the original was a little strong - it's much better in the re-post. i might explore it further? but altogether, this has a nice mood and composition.

Ted, I like the feeling of this image, even with the toning. Nice! The revision with the mist and contrast adjustment is an improvement. I am trying to decide if the 3 rocks in the water at the end of the point in the mist catch my eye or make a continuation of the point- your thoughts?

The tones and the ghostly fog is quite intriguing.
Well done Ted.

Just my type of shot man. I love simplicity and surreal. This has both in abundance. My only small nit might be the brightness of the highlights. I might like it better with them slightly toned down. :toast:

Well, the beetle kill depresses the heck out of me, but it does work for this moody shot--sad, but effective. :wavey:

Stan, that is a bummer. I didn't realize that's what was going on here. Just figured it was the regular cycle of life. I know beetles are a big problem with the pines in the upper elevations of the smokies too. It sucks. A result of acid rain weakening the trees so that can't defend themselves against the beetle, I believe.

The large version addresses the issues I was going to mention Ted. Glad you didn't succumb to laziness! And just a suggestion... change "awaking" to "awakening"...

Love the monochromatic simplicity, the incredible mist, and the stark graphic quality to the dead trees. A superb image in my opinion.
