Breaching Humpback

Another image from the amazing breaching show that occurred right in front of our boat during my recent Great Bear Rainforest tour. I was fortunate to have my shorter lens with me (the 400-600mm lenses everyone had set up would've been too long) to capture a few shots as the whales breached well within 50 meters of the boat.

I imagine the centered composition won't appeal to everyone, but I played with a few variations and this was most appealing to me.

Canon 1D Mark IV
Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS
ISO 400
1/2500th
f/5.6
(Not sharpened at all, since the spray would look too pixelated)

Nice catch, Max. Perfectly timed. Amazing how far out the water the whale is. :toast:

Truly one of the great spectacles of the natural world. You really captured him at the apex of his breach. I like the composition as is, the froth in the lower right corner leads the eye to the action. Nice job on the minimal processing as well Max!

This is a lovely breach, mate! Don't mind the central placement at all...

Great whale image. I would love to have this image in my collection. You caught him at the height of his jump, so you got a lot of the whale out of the water.

Max.

Great capture of the "moment", the centred composition does not bother me at all :toast: :toast:

An opportunity like this doesn't present itself often. Good timing on your part, you captured a great image.
