So often the adults of this species are more skittish than the juveniles, but this year they have been much more tolerant. Make me curious to know if they are instinctive to safety in number. Tuesday I had the chance to get up close and personal with one of them, shooting without extenders, and at such a close range I had to reset my focus range at 2-6 meters. The handrail didn't allow a lower angle, but the bird's posture seemed acceptable. This is a crop at 60% of original 4/3rds format. The BG is duckweed in shallow marsh water. Larger image included.

E-5 ZD300 F2.8 Wimberley I on GT2531. ISO 400 1/1000 f4.5 -0.3EV, a bit of selective sharpening on the end of the bill and parts beyond the neck.

A nice change in composition and detail on the bird. Looks perfect to me.

Nice work getting this close, and a nice addition to a portfolio on this species.
