Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos)

Place: Gilbert Water Ranch, AZ
Date: December 9, 2009 8:18 am
Equipment: Nikon D200, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, sidekick
ISO 400, aperture priority spot meter, 1/200th second @ f/5.6
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac, modest crop

A common and widespread species, but I always enjoy them and take every opportunity to photograph them. This was a gloomy day with a bland sky, but I liked the pose and unusual perch. Spot metered on the mockingbird to deal with the sky.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated.

The branch leads the eye into and out of the frame nicely for your centered comp. Very nice details. Sharon

Rich, I love to hear the music of these, and often do, but rarely take the opportunity to photograph them. Nice job on detail with the amount of glass and shutter speed. This one looks cold!

One of my favorite birds. I enjoy their attitude and their singing! Good detail and a clean background.

Wonderful detail. I like the perch also. I guess it was because the bird was cold, but I love the way it looks so soft and fluffy.

Nice detail and muted tones Rich. The Black Falcon is our largest in terms of overall length (females up to 55cm as opposed to Peregrines at 50cm) but it is not as barrel-chested as a Peregrine.

Rich, Very nice detail and soft light on the bird. The Mockingbird is perfectly exposed. I enjoyed studying the focus gradation on the perch.

Hi Richard. Very nice mood created by the minimalist background and perch, combined with the soothing color scheme. The bird's expression also seems to fit the mood! Excellent. :toast:
